Descriptif

Conférence donnée dans le cadre de l'inauguration de l’Institut de Physique Théorique Philippe Meyer, créé en février 2012 au Département de physique de l’Ecole normale supérieure. Cet institut a pour but de promouvoir la recherche en physique théorique et de participer à la formation de jeunes théoriciens par l’organisation de conférences et d’échanges scientifiques internationaux, et par des contrats post-doctoraux.

"We review the present state of and future outlook for our understanding of neutrino masses and mixings. We discuss what we think are the most important perspectives on the plausible and natural scenarios for neutrinos and what may have the most promise to throw light on the flavor problem of quarks and leptons. We focus on the seesaw mechanism which fits into the big picture of particle physics such as supersymmetry and grand unification providing a unified approach to flavor problem of quarks and leptons. We argue that in combination with family symmetries, this may be at the heart of a unified understanding of flavor puzzle. We also discuss other new physics ideas such as neutrinos in models with extra dimensions and possible theoretical implications of sterile neutrinos. We outline some tests for the various schemes."

Cursus :

Physicien et théoricien, il est professeur de physique théorique à l'Université de Rome. En 1987-2006 il a effectué des recherches à la Division de la théorie au CERN à Genève. Il a également enseigné dans diverses universités parmi celles-ci : l'Université de New York (68-69), l'Université Rockefeller (New York, 69-70), l'Universita' "La Sapienza" de Rome (70-92 ), l'Ecole Normale Supérieure à Paris (76-77) et l'Université de Boston (85-86). Il fut directeur de la Section de Rome "La Sapienza" de l'INFN (85-87). Ses contributions à la recherche couvrent un large spectre de problèmes dans la phénoménologie des interactions des particules élémentaires, en liaison étroite avec les expériences. 

On remarquera que le CERN a joué un rôle de premier plan dans la préparation et l'interprétation des expériences avec les grands accélérateurs (SPPS, le LEP, le LHC ....) qui ont suivi au fil du temps. I
