Pasteur’s landmark work on the hemihedral crystals of sodium ammonium tartrate initiated the ideas that would lead to the definition and the understanding of molecular chirality, super-molecular chirality and the relations between them. I will examine examples of chirality in crystals pertaining to biomineralization, such as some sponge spicules, and examples related to pathological crystallizations, such as the helical crystals of cholesterol that form in bile or in atherosclerosis. Pasteur’s message is still very much alive !
